Q Fever
Q Fever is caused by a bacteria called Coxiella burnetii. It is spread from livestock such as sheep, cattle, and both wild and domestic animals. When humans come into contact with the bacteria, they can get severe flu like symptoms and there is risk of complications including pneumonia, or hepatitis.
How do you get Q Fever?
a. direct contact with the infected animal through broken skin
b. contact with airborne bacteria
- birthing, slaughtering or butchering of animals
- handling infected animal fluids, tissue excretions
- herding, sheering or transporting animals
- mowing contaminated grass
c. drinking unpasteurised milk from infected animals
Vaccination is the best way to proctect yourself from acquiring Q fever. This is recommended for those who work in high risk occupations including
a. veterinarians / nurses / students
b. farmers / stock handlers / stockyard workers
c. abattoir workers

Dr David Le from Ashford Avenue Family Practice offers Q fever vaccination. It requires 2 consultations over 7 days.
- On the first visit, a skin prick test and a blood test is performed.
- You will be required to return 7 days later (cannot be before or after) for results to determine whether the vaccine if given or not.
Details about this visit whether the Q fever vaccine or not will be uploaded into te Australian Immunisation Record (AIR).
Q fever consultations are available by appointment and attract a private fee. Please ring reception on 02 9774 3388 to make a booking.
